Adopt-A-Block, directed by Sheri Maycock, was birthed in 2004 as an outreach arm of Church Alive International. Since that time, AAB has ministered weekly in the Lansdowne Park housing community in Roanoke's inner city. AAB's vision is to eventually expand into other communities in Roanoke, helping residents learn their value and worth in the eyes of God, and helping guide them in taking pride in who they are and in their homes and communities.
The Adopt-A-Block Team visits with the residents of Lansdowne every Saturday morning, providing them with practical gifts, such as washcloths, clothespins, or hangers. The Team also helps the residents take pride in their neighborhood by helping clean up lawns and streets in Lansdowne, and by providing special events, such as the Adopt-A-Block Home Makeover program.
Adopt-A-Block strives to reach the residents' individual needs when they arise, providing a venue through which the people of Church Alive International can give away items like furniture, appliances, dishes, clothing, etc., knowing the items are being given directly to residents AAB regular ministers to in the Lansdowne Park community.
Adopt-A-Block also sponsors special events for the children and families of Lansdowne, such as the annual AAB Fall Festival and the annual AAB Easter Egg Hunt, both of which are held in Horton Park, across the street from the Lansdowne Community. Before the beginning of each school year, Adopt-A-Block coordinates a Backpack Giveaway, through which funds are raised to purchase and fill backpacks full of school supplies, which are then given to the children AAB ministers to on a weekly basis in Lansdowne. Similarly, near the Christmas holidays, Adopt-A-Block conducts a Christmas Stocking Giveaway, through which large stockings full of goodies and treats are given to the children.
